Mayweather vs Pacquiao Fight Drug Testing Issue

As I understand, Mayweather's camp is claiming that Pacquiao won't
give blood samples after the initial press conference. Blood testing
is what differentiates the Olympic style testing from the standard
urine testing that the Nevada Athletic Commission conducts and which
Pacquiao has never failed. Mayweather Sr has implied that Pacquiao's
exceptional power and ability to maintain his speed through various
weight classes is due to performance enhancing drugs. Pacquiao's
nutritionist claims that Manny uses legal supplements and trainer
Freddy Roach has said in the past that they have no issue with the
tests. There have been steroid issues in boxings past. Shane Mosley
tested positive after beating Oscar de la Hoya the second time.
Mosley claimed he had unknowingly taken illegal substances. Fernando
Vargas tested positive following his loss to Oscar. While drugs do
not therefore guarantee victory, it would definitely tarnish PacMan's
historic accomplishments. More to come as details allow.

Fight Night - Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto

Pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao meets Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand this Saturday night. Pacquiao will be looking to claim yet another title as Cotto's WBO welterweight belt (147 lbs) will be on the line. In addition, the fight will most likely determine who will meet Floyd Mayweather Jr. for what would be the biggest fight possible in the sport today.

Pacquiao has risen steadily through the weight divisions, claiming titles along the way. His retiring of Oscar De La Hoya placed him on the mainstream sport stage, although his classic battles with Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Juan Manuel Marquez had made him a favorite among boxing fans much earlier. His explosive speed, lethal left hand, and style of controlled fury have made him a dangerous fighter to his opponents and occasionally himself. Under the tutelage of Freddie Roach, Pacquiao has blossomed into an all around fighter with power in both hands and uncanny ring control. He has coupled this with a disciplined approach to this training and a series of precision gameplans.

Cotto is one of the deep welterweight division's top fighters and one of the pound for pound best. His controversial loss to Antonio Margarito at the end of possibly loaded gloves was thought to have taken his warrior spirit. He has followed this setback with a series of tattoos while claiming the WBO belt from Michael Jennings. Cotto's methodical style has caused some to label him as a boxing robot. His powerful left hook and vicious body attack have proven too much for most opponents.

Pac Man followed his win against De La Hoya with an annihilation of Ricky Hatton. His pin point accurate punches and superior hand speed overmatched Hatton from the opening bell. His second round knockout was an all time classic.

Cotto defended his belt against Joshua Clottey in his last outing. Cotto suffered a severe cut over his left eye due to a clash of heads from the third round on. His resiliency in fighting through this disadvantage did much to quiet questions of his resolve. Cotto's use of distance and the jab allowed him to eke out a split decision.

Pacquiao's decisive victories and seeming mastery of the sport at the hands of Roach have allowed him to attain the P4P crown. He is the favorite Saturday as most think his speed will be able to eventually conquer Cotto's brawn.

Despite his welterweight fight with De La Hoya, Pacquiao has never fought a natural 147-pounder. The fight is set at 145 pounds in an effort by his camp to bring Cotto down. That being said, Cotto will most likely still pack more power than Pacquiao has faced. Some observers believe that Cotto is being underestimated and that his punches, particularly to the body, will wear down the naturally smaller Pac Man. If he is able us his strength to inflict damage on Pacquiao and land his jab consistently, he could overwhelm him.

Despite a friend`s comparison of Manny's pre-fight movie career chronicled on HBO`s excellent 24/7 to Rocky III, I do not see Cotto playing Clubber Lang to Pacquiao`s Balboa. Pac Man has been consistently prepared and focused for his recent outings, and I believe his camp is taking the threat of Cotto seriously.

I predict that Pacquiao's speed will allow him utilize both hands to jump in and score points while avoiding too much punishment from Cotto.

Pacquiao by decision or late round stoppage.

Junior Middleweight James Kirkland Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison

More bad news
for the once rising prospect.

Kirkland, who last fought in March, has been incarcerated since April at the Federal Correctional Institution in Bastrop, Texas, about 20 minutes from Austin, after being arrested for buying a firearm at a gun show. He could be out by June, according to Michael Miller, Kirkland's personal attorney and co-manager.

Kirkland would get credit for the approximately six months he has already served. In addition he can earn credits for good behavior and Texas rules allow for the final six months of his sentence to be served in a halfway house, Miller said.

Hopefully, the Golden Boy can be a positive influence and keep James in the ring.

Besides Miller testifying on Kirkland's behalf, so too did his promoter, Golden Boy's Oscar De La Hoya, who made the trip to Austin with others from the company.

"I told the judge that James made a stupid mistake that cost him dearly," De La Hoya told ESPN.com after leaving the hearing."I told the judge, yes, we all make mistakes and we all need role models. I want to take James under my wing and guide him. He's never had that before."

That is, once he gets out.

Fight Night - Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Juan Manuel Marquez

Floyd Mayweather Jr. ends his 21-month "retirement" on Saturday night when he faces Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. Competing with the first ever UFC in Dallas, Mayweather is hoping to establish his claim to the #1 pound for pound title as well as the #1 PPV draw. It remains to be seen whether the PPV numbers Mayweather vs Oscar De la Hoya and Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton garnered were not due to his opponents.

Mayweather (39-0) will be coming back from an almost 2 year break. He retired unexpectedly, backing out of an agreed rematch with De la Hoya and forfeiting a multi-million dollar payday. Their prior bout set the record for PPVs for a boxing match. Mayweather claims that he has returned to reclaim his throne as the P4P king and because "boxing needs him." There have been reports that his ongoing battles with the IRS may play a role as well.

Marquez (51-4-1) is ranked #2 pound for pound in the world by the Ring. He has established himself as the preeminent Mexican boxer, and his punishing style has endeared him to fans. In the past, he has suffered multiple knockdowns and cuts only to comeback and will himself to victory.

"Money" Mayweather's last outing was against Hatton in December 2007. While Hatton attempted to swarm Mayweather early on and appeared to frustrate him briefly, Floyd dictated the fight. Having toyed with Hatton for several rounds, Mayweather landed a perfect check hook which sent Hatton into the corner post and onto his back. While Hatton regained his footing, Mayweather quickly knocked him out.

"Dinamita" Marquez took his belt to Juan Diaz's hometown of Houston Texas in his last fight. Before a raucous crowd, Diaz pressured Marquez from the first bell. Attempting to use his youth and power against the older Marquez, Diaz pinned Juan against the ropes on several occasions. Displaying his grit and veteran wisdom, Marquez was able to survive these early rounds and exact his revenge on the depleted "Baby Bull." After putting Diaz down with right hands towards the end of the 9th round, Marquez finished him off with an uppercut to claim victory.

The proceedings on Saturday night will have implications throughout the boxing world. Looming over this fight is the possibility of a match with the P4P king, Manny Pacquiao. Following Floyd`s exit, De la Hoya tapped Pacquiao for his replacement. Pacquiao returned the favor by sending the larger De la Hoya into retirement. Following this, Pacquiao knocked out another former Mayweather opponent when he sent Hatton into career limbo and possible retirement with one of the all time great knockouts. Mayweather has scoffed at claims of Pacquiao being the sport's king. Nonetheless, a Mayweather victory will almost surely set the stage for a superfight between him and Pacman. For Marquez'z part, he too seeks Manny but for different reasons. Pacquiao and Marquez fought to a draw in 2004 at featherweight (125 lbs). Their rematch in 2007 at super featherweight (129lbs) was awarded a split decision to Pacquiao. Many observers has stated that Marquez could have easily been given both decisions. Following this fight, Pacquiao moved up to lightweight (135 lbs) and beyond. Marquez has followed Pacquiao up in weight, claiming the linear championship and seemingly searching for a final meeting with Pacman.

Marquez should enter the fight with a familiar game plan for Mayweather. He will attempt to go to the body to slow him down while overwhelming him with punch output. This strategy, while sound, is incredibly difficult to execute against the talented Mayweather. His shoulder roll defense is one of the best ever, with the possible exception of a young James Toney. In addition, Mayweather's speed should be more than Marquez can overcome. As with the Hatton fight, Mayweather will enjoy size and strength advantages over his opponent despite a 144lbs catchweight that would seem to favor the naturally lighter Marquez. When coupled with his speed, this makes for a seemingly one sided affair.

I predict that this fight should go the distance with Mayweather winning by decision.

Fedor Signs with Strikeforce

Fedor will debut for Strikeforce this Fall when the first fight under the contract puts him on Showtime, which is also a bit of a surprise. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker had previously commented that if his company were able to sign Fedor, it would probably necessitate and immediate move to pay-per-view. All of Fedor’s previous fights in the U.S. have been on pay-per-view.

"I am looking forward to going back to work and fighting at the highest level," said the 33-year-old Emelianenko in a statement issued by Strikeforce. "Strikeforce is a top fight promotion that houses some of the greatest fighters in the world. I am prepared to fight any of them."

Fedor's Future

With this announcement by EA, the anticipated signing of Fedor Emelianenko to UFC appears to be in jeopardy.

It is difficult to imagine these two companies cooperating, given Dana White's prior comments:

"We put our asses on the line, THQ and the UFC, to make a video-game deal in the worst economy in the world," White said. "We go out there and do this thing, and it's successful, and now [expletive] EA Sports wants to do a video game. Really? That's not what you told us a year-and-a-half ago.

"You told us you'd never be in business with us. They wouldn't even take a meeting because mixed martial arts disgusted them. This wasn't a real sport. Boy, they got over that real quick, didn't they?

"I'm not tap-dancing around this thing or whatever," White said. "I'm telling you straight-up, I'm at war with them right now. That's how I look at it.

"You won't be in the UFC," White said about additional fighters who sign with EA Sports."

Vernon Forrest Shot and Killed

According to ESPN.com:

Forrest, whose title was vacated in May amid an indefinite rib injury, was shot seven or eight times as he chased at least two men who had tried to steal his Jaguar as he put air in his tires at an Atlanta gas station, Lt. Keith Meadows said, according to the radio station.

But Forrest had a gun and confronted the men, police said.

"The victim and suspect became involved in a brief foot chase," Lt. Meadows said. "At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the two of them. The victim was shot at least once in the head."

Forrest, 38, was fatally wounded by two semi-automatic weapons, according to police.

Fedor to the UFC?

Given the recent news that Affliction will cease to promote MMA events, the question remains as to whether Fedor Emelianenko will now join the ranks of the UFC.

This should happen, as a heavyweight championship showdown with Brock Lesnar is one of the top fights that could be made in the sport.

Showtime Super Middleweight Tournament

As reported by ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, Showtime will host a six man super middleweight tournament (168 lbs). The fighters are as follows:

Mikkel Kessler
Carl Froch
Jermain Taylor
Andre Dirrell
Andre Ward
Arthur Abraham

As the current champ, I like Froch in this tournament. Kessler gave Calzaghe a good fight, but hasn't shown much since. Taylor lost a recent heartbreaker to Froch in the final seconds of the final round. Olympians Ward and Dirrell may be overmatched. The unknown to me is how ex-middleweight titlist Abraham performs.

Gatti's Wife Held by Brazilian Authorities on Charge of Murder

From Sports Illustrated:

Brazilian authorities detained the wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti and formally accused her Sunday of killing him at a posh seaside tourist resort in Brazil.

Police said 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues was taken into custody after contradictions in her interrogation and presented a formal accusation against her. Prosecutors will later decide whether she will be charged.

Arturo Gatti Found Dead in Brazil

As reported by several sources, Arturo "Thunder" Gatti was found dead in his hotel room in the resort of Porto de Galihnas. The cause of death is unknown at this time. Gatti had arrived on Friday with his wife Amanda and 1-year old son.

I am deeply saddened by this news. Gatti's thrilling trilogy with Micky Ward accounts for some of my favorites rounds that I have had the pleasure to watch live. His go for broke style, iron chin, and willingness to press forward and suffer punishment endeared him to fans. Although he was unable to overcome the top competition as when he faced Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr., Gatti remained a fan favorite throughout his 40-9 career. He will be missed.

Here is some classic Gatti, from his first fight with Ward (courtesy of Queensbery Rules).

Fight Night: UFC 100

As the UFC celebrates its 100th event, Dana White is rolling out his strongest card yet for the fans in Vegas and around the world.

Frank Mir (12-3) takes on Brock Lesnar (3-1) for the undisputed heavyweight championship (265 lbs). Although Lesnar is a monster, I see Mir being too talented and well rounded for him.

Prediction: Mir by submission/decision

George St. Pierre (18-2) defends his welterweight belt (170 lbs) against Thiago Alves (22-4). If GSP can avoid an Alves knockout, I see no reason to pick against the second best MMA fighter in the world.

Prediction: GSP by decision

Ultimate Fighter coaches Michael Bisping (18-1) and Dan Henderson (24-7) will face off at middleweight (185 lbs). I believe that Henderson left too much of himself back in Pride. But Bisping should be careful. A win may get him a shot at P4P champ Anderson Silva.

Prediction: Bisping by decision

In addition, I like Boilermaker Jon Fitch (22-3) over Paulo Thiago (11-0) at welterweight (170 lbs).

A tragic end to a good boxer and great puncher. Remembered for his epic fights with Aaron "the Hawk" Pryor, the Argentinian was 82-8 over his career. After boxing, the former "Explosive Thin Man" enjoyed a career in politics. Although he briefly fought against the Sandinista government, he would become mayor of Managua after eventually joining the party.

Fight Night: Miguel Cotto vs Joshua Clottey

Expect a packed house at Madison Square Garden Saturday night when welterweight Miguel Cotto (34-1) takes on Joshua Clottey (35-2-1) for Cotto's WBO belt. The Puerto Rican Cotto is a fan favorite in NYC. Clottey had to relinquish the IBF welterweight belt that he took from Zab Judah.

Cotto is the heavy favorite, although this will be his first real test since suffering a loss at the possibly loaded hands of Antonio Margarito. In the aftermath of Margarito's suspension following the discovering of illegal material in his gloves prior to his loss to Shane Mosley, many have questioned whether his unusually heavy hands may have been doctored when he handed Cotto his first defeat. Regardless of this, it will be interesting to to see if the damage, both physical and mental, that was inflicted by the "Tijuana Tornado" has ruined Cotto.

Clottey is a dangerous pressure fighter that should not be overlooked. His powerful counter punching could cause Cotto trouble. He is a large welterweight (147 pounds), who can weigh up to 160 pounds on the day of the fight. He will have reach and height advantages as well. He owns notable victories over Judah and Diego Corrales. The Ghanan conditioning is never in question, which could be a factor.

As an added element, Cotto has been mentioned as a possible opponent of P4P champ and sometime welterweight Manny Pacquiao. Clottey has said a win should give him the shot at the king, but that is doubtful given his low profile outside hard core boxing circles.

I anticipate a grueling fight which should go the distance. Given both fighter's tendency to focus most of their damage on the inside, this should be a battle of two of the best body punchers. As Clottey defensive high guard leaves him more susceptible to these blows, he may come out the worse if there are lengthy exchanges. I expect Cotto to outwork Clottey for the first half of the fight. If he experiences his usual late fade, Clottey should be able to close the gap in the later rounds.

Cotto by close split decision.

Report: Faber Broke Hand in Title Fight with Brown

Ouch.

Although it might not have changed the outcome, I wouldn't mind seeing how Faber would have fared with two hands.

Kimbo Slice Will Compete for Spot in UFC

Kimbo Slice will join other heavyweight contestants on season 10 of the Ultimate Fighter.

This is a smart move by the UFC and namely Dana White.  White has dismissed Slice since his beginning with EliteXC, stating that he was simply the toughest guy at the bar-b-que.  Instead of granting him a spot to cash in on his notoriety as CBS and Showtime attempted to, the UFC is making Slice prove himself as any other prospect would.

I will be interested to see how Slice does under the guidance of coaches Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson.

Jackson and Evans Named as Coaches for Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter

An excited Rampage and the barely ex-champ Rashad were announced today as captains of the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.

The eventual fight between the coaches would have been for the light heavyweight belt, if not for two things:

1) Quinton's jaw injury against Keith Jardine at UFC 96 and subsequent surgery. This cost him a title shot against Evans.

2) Lyoto Machida

Fight Night: UFC 98

The UFC stages its first championship match between unbeatens when Lyoto "the Dragon" Machida challenges the light heavyweight champ "Sugar" Rashad Evans.

Rashad (13-0-1), a former contestant and eventual heavyweight winner on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) reality series, was NJCAA wrestling champion at 165 lbs before competing for three years at Michigan State. After college, he trained under Dan Severn and began his mixed martial arts career with a series of wins. Following his success on TUF, he has continued his winning ways with victories over Stephen Bonner, Sean Salmon, and Michael Bisping. Rashad earned widespread recognition by defeating Chuck Liddell with a devastating knockout punch at UFC 88. Continuing his upward trend, he challenged Forrest Griffin for the light heavyweight belt at UFC 92. Controlling the action with his striking, Rashad was able to catch Griffin with a punch in the third round. The stunned Griffin was unable to defend himself against the ensuing ground and pound attack and the fight was stopped. This will be Evans first defense of his belt.

Machida (14-0) began traininig in karate in his native Brazil at the age of 4. Under the tutelage of his father, Shotokan karate master Yoshizo Machida, he was able to earn his black belt by the age of 12. In addition to karate, Machida has also trained extensively in sumo and Brazilian jiu jitsu. He began his mixed martial arts career under Antoni Inoki in Japan. Competing in New Japan Pro Wrestling and K-1, Machida defeated Stephen Bonnar, Rich Franklin, and B.J. Penn among others. After make the move to the UFC, Machida continued his success. His trademark elusiveness was displayed at UFC 84 against Tito Ortiz. Using counter-striking and movement, Machida was able to frustrate Tito until he was able to land a knee that put him on the mat. Although Ortiz attempted various chokes and an armbar, Machida was able to survive with a unanimous decision. In his last fight, Machida scored an uncharacteristic first round knockout against fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva.

Evans has been cast as the underdog, despite his belt being on the line. With his strong wrestling background and powerful striking ability, he will be looking to overpower Machida. Given Machida's tendency towards utilizing lateral movement and counters to inflict damage, this will be a difficult task for Evans. Although efficient at doling out punishment without receiving any, Machida has been criticized for a sometimes boring style. Unless Evans is able to impose his will on Machida and catch him with strikes, Lyoto should be able to bore his way to the championship.

Machida by decision

Boxer Benjamin Flores, 25, Dies Following Bout

As reported in several outlets, boxer Benjamin Flores died at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas on Tuesday.  The cause of death was ruled to be "blunt head injuries."  Having watchedthe fight from ringside, this sad news hits close to home.

Flores, 19-4, was facing Al Seeger for the North American Boxing Federation bantamweight belt (122 lbs).  This was the main event of a four fight card as part of the Texas Real Estate Council's annual Fight Night.  The fight was a competitive and close contest.  In the eighth round of a scheduled twelve, Seeger put Flores into the ropes with a body shot.  Seeger followed with several shots to the head.  As Flores had stopped defending himself, the referee Laurence Cole stopped the fight.  Although a stool was brought to him, he insisted on laying down and lost consciousness.  Ringside doctors began working on him, and he was eventually sent to Parkland where he underwent surgery.

Flores leaves behind a wife and 10 month old son.  Born in Morelia Mexico and living in Houston, he split his time between training under his father and working at a local Taco Bell.

This is a painful reminder of the dangerous nature of these sports.  The fine line between an exciting sporting competition and a potentially deadly fight can be blurred quickly.

A memorial fund has been established by the Real Estate Council.  Contributions can be sent to the following:

Money Returns to Face Dinamita

As reported before last Saturday's big fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his return to the ring.  He will face lightweight champ and No.2 Pound for Pound Juan Manuel Marquez.

The fight is schedule to take place July 18th.  With the winner most likely facing Pacquiao, this fight will be looked at as a stepping stone for Mayweather.  Given Pacquiao's destruction of Hatton, many fans will be clamoring for an immediate fight.  However, I am pleased that Mayweather is taking on a tough challenge in his first fight back.  Remember, Marquez gave Pacquiao trouble in their two encounters.  And although they are recognized as a draw and a lost split decision, Juan believes that he won both fights.

With either Pacquiao-Marquez III or Pacquiao-Mayweather in the battle for the P4P crown as the outcome, this is a fight not to be missed.

Fight Night - Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton

The biggest fight of 2009 is happening in Las Vegas Saturday night. Pound for pound king Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao is challenging Ricky "the Hitman" Hatton for his junior welterweight belt (140 lbs). The fight sold out the MGM Garden Arena in April despite current economic conditions.

Pacquiao (49-3-2) is the best boxer in the world. Originally turning pro at 106 lbs, he has won titles in 5 weight classes (flyweight, junior featherweight, featherweight, junior lightweight, and lightweight). As noted by ESPN's Dan Rafael, he will be attempting to win a belt in a 6th weight class on Saturday. The only other fighter in history to win belts in 6 weight classes is Oscar de la Hoya, whom Pacquiao demolished and retired in his last fight at welterweight (147 lbs). Despite the changes in weight, Pac-Man has maintained his formidable punching power. Although the normal trend is that a smaller fighter with power will find his punch diminished against larger opponents, Pacquiao has improved as he has moved up. While he is at the top boxing, he has still not established that he has reached his peak size.

Hatton (45-1), has been the champion at light welterweight since taking the belt from longtime champ Kostya Kszyu in Manchester in 2005. This was a showcase of Hatton's already famous swarming style. He relies on volume and activity in the form of body punches and hooks to wear down his opponents. This is coupled with a strong will and the willingness to receive punishment in order to inflict it.

Hatton will be again taking on the P4P king in Las Vegas. The last attempt was against "Pretty Boy" Floyd "Money" Mayweather in 2007. Although Hatton was able to seemingly catch and frustrate Floyd early in the fight, Mayweather dominated the entire outing. As Hatton became frustrated, Mayweather was able to land combinations at will culminating in a perfectly timed check hook that sent Ricky into the turnbuckle and onto his back. Although he regained his feet in time, Floyd jumped on him until the ref stopped the fight and handed Ricky his first loss. Since then, Hatton has regrouped with two victories and taken on a new trainer, Mayweather's father Floyd senior.

Pacquiao is an international superstar, especially in his native Philippines. He has recorded hit pop songs, owns and plays on his own basketball team, and performs generous charity work. Despite losing a recent congressional election, Manny has plans for a political life following his boxing career.

Hatton enjoys similar worship in England. Throngs of British supporters descended on Las Vegas for Hatton's first fight in America against Mayweather. An estimated 20,000 fans took over the casino and dominated the crowd with soccer-style Hatton chants. Ricky's publicized fondness for beer and pub food has endeared him to people as a regular guy with a warrior's spirit.

Despite his fame at home, Pacquiao did not reach celebrity status in the Western world (outside of boxing fans) until his destruction of de la Hoya in his last fight. Having never fought as heavy as welterweight and given his opponent's Hall of Fame career, Pacquiao was viewed as a heavy underdog. Instead, Pacquiao overwhelmed Oscar from the first bell, hitting him repeatedly with his trademark straight lefts and his recently developed rights. Showing his superior speed, Manny was able to land the majority of his punches and frustrated Oscar with his movement and use of angles. As often happens in boxing, de la Hoya appeared to age instantly in the ring until he quit on his stool after the eighth round.

Hatton's last fight against Paulie Malignaggi was viewed as a showcase for the benefits of his new tutelage under Floyd "Joy" Mayweather Sr. The light hitting Malignaggi was overmatched by Hatton over eleven rounds, though any great changes in Hatton's attack were minor. While Mayweather Sr. has stressed the use of the jab, Hatton used it sparingly and usually to set up his hook. His defense was improved, though it is likely that in the heat of a fight he will still forget to dodge or block the majority of punches he faces. Despite this, Hatton turned in a strong showing before Malignaggi's corner threw in the towel.

As showcased on HBO's excellent 24/7 series, the fighters' trainers have achieved an unusually high level of exposure in this fight. Freddie Roach has trained Pacquiao for the majority of his career and can be credited with helping him to achieve his current status as the best in the world. Stressing strong fundamentals, he has turned Manny from a one dimensional fighter that relied heavily on his unusually powerful left hand into a well rounded boxer. Roach has been named Trainer of the Year three times, most recently in 2008. In contrast, Mayweather Sr. focuses his charges on flashy hand pad work and defensive prowess Although he has claimed credit for his son's success, it is often cited that Floyd Jr.`s true development occured under his uncle, Roger Mayweather. Hatton should show improvement in his jabbing and defense, though it is unclear how much can be learned at this stage with a short amount of time.

Pacquiao should look to establish his superiority against Hatton early, much as he did against Oscar. Pac-Man will have a vast advantage in hand speed, allowing him to attack Ricky quickly. Hatton, though, has under appreciated foot speed and should make for a more difficult target than the slow and plodding de la Hoya. Citing his comfort at the weight, Hatton believes he will be able to hurt Pacquiao. Expect him to eventually wage into Manny and try to slow him down with his body attack and hooks. Pacquiao has shown a tendency to get hit early in his career, often raising his gloves and bouncing back and forth after getting caught in a taunting gesture. Roach has worked with Manny to improve his head movement, which allows him to use his speed and unusual angles to do damage without having to trade. In his toughest fights, particularly against current lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez, Pacquiao was timed and caught with counter punches when he attempted to jump in with his straight lefts. Using this blueprint, Marquez and Erik Morales were able to slow Manny down and cause him trouble. Hatton, though, has not shown the inclination or the patience for counter punching, preferring to dictate the fight himself.

Despite popular opinion, I think Hatton will prove a tough opponent for Manny. Given the one sided showing against the faded de la Hoya, many see Pacquiao as being an unstoppable force. Respect for Hatton's body and hook attack should keep Manny from a careless onslaught. Instead, I expect Pacquiao to display his punching power and precision, along with his blinding speed, in executing a careful game plan early on. If he can weather Hatton's attacks, he should become more comfortable and begin to beat Hatton up at will. Ricky's pride should keep him in the fight absorbing punishment until the end.

Pacquiao by KO or late stoppage

Also, look for junior middleweight Erislandi Lara against Chris Gray on the undercard. Lara is a former Cuban amateur champion who recently defected. After leaving Cuba in 2007, he was caught by Cuban authorities and brought home where he was suspended from boxing. A second defection attempt by speedboat to Mexico in 2008 proved more successful.
